Esther Isabelle Holmes was born to Leon and Lola Holmes in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her family attended Christ Temple Church under the pastorate of Bishop G. T. Haywood and Elder Robert T. Tobin. She was baptized in Jesus' name at 10 and received the Holy Ghost at age 14 during a youth revival. After graduating from Crispus Attucks High School, she came to Chicago to study at the Vogue School of Fashion Design. It was at a church picnic, in Chicago, where she met her future husband, Arthur M. Brazier. Within a few months, they became engaged and within one year they were married February 21, 1948. Sister Brazier does not strive to be the focus of attention. Instead, she is dedicated to providing tireless support for her husband and the ministry. As she told a group of women at a marriage retreat a few years ago, "Don't be resentful of the time your husband spends on the work of the Lord. Be supportive. As he progresses, you'll progress." Sister Brazier has initiated many programs in the church. She currently serves as the moderator for the Women's Ministries. In the 1960s, she founded the Youth Activity Group, which led to a strong Youth Ministry and a national retreat that now attracts more than 1,000 saints each year that it's held. She later took special interest in the singles of the church and formed a ministry that focused on their spiritual growth and development. As a woman of vision, she also worked to organized volunteers, the Drama Guild, and the Liturgical Dance Ministry. Most recently, she organized a partnership with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to bring orchestral music to the youth of the Apostolic Church of God. Sister Brazier made many sacrifices as a mother of four young children. When the children grew older, she returned to college and to work full-time at Planned Parenthood. Despite her busy schedule, she raised her children (Lola, Byron, Janice, and Rosalyn) in the fear and admonition of the Lord. All are saved and are active members of the church. Lola is a member of the Board of Trustees and the church's general administrator; Byron is the pastor of the Apostolic Church of God; Janice manages the church's information systems; and Rosalyn lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband and two sons, where she attends the Faith Christian Church, but she remains a member of the Apostolic Church of God. The generations continue, as Sister Brazier is grandmother to seven and great-grandmother to four. |
